    M. Benjamin Jungfleisch received a Ph.D. in physics from University of Kaiserslautern, Kaiserslautern, Germany. Currently, he is a postdoctoral appointee in Argonne’s Magnetic Films Group in the Materials Science Division.

    He is working in the field of spin dynamics and material properties of magnetic thin films and multilayers. The main focus of his work is on magnon spintronics, the field that treats magnons, the elementary quanta of spin waves, in view of transport phenomena. His research interests are the fabrication and experimental characterization of magnetic and transport properties of a variety of meso- and nanoscale magnetic materials.

    The purpose of his project is to experimentally investigate localized dynamics due to topological defects in artificial spin ice systems and ultimately develop new approaches for their controlled manipulation. By using Brillouin light scattering spectroscopy theoretical predictions are tested at a microscopic level, which will be used to explore novel ways to control and manipulate the evolution of the topological defects. The most direct impact of this work will be in terms of a better fundamental understanding on how topological defects impact the dynamic behavior of frustrated magnetic systems.
