Energy Conversion and Storage

The energy conversion and storage group focuses on charge-transfer processes, as well as the chemical environment in the vicinity of electrode surfaces. As the name indicates there are two main research directions. The energy conversion part focuses mainly on fuel cell reactions, with a special focus on the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), in cooperation with several industrial partners. A better insight in the ORR through single-crystal work and the synthesis of novel nanoparticulate catalysts has led to an increase in activity and stability of fuel cell cathode catalysts with reduced noble-metal content. A new direction for the group is the energy storage part where the focus will be put on lithium-air batteries.
