User Safety
All researchers who will be present in the EMC laboratories for experiments must read and follow the requirements of one or more experiment safety analysis forms (SAF). The SAFs define the scope of work that occurs in the EMC, identify hazards, and establish engineering and administrative controls for those hazards.
After reading the appropriate SAFs, researchers sign the corresponding participant lists in the EMC laboratories. The statement that they agree to is, "I have read the Project Safety Review Documentation listed above and will obey all requirements stated in the document, its accompanying procedures, and in the relevant portions of the Argonne safety manuals. I have received the required training, and my Job Hazards Questionnaire (JHQ) accurately reflects my work as a participant in this project." All registered users/researchers have an appropriate JHQ that is automatically generated by Argonne. The required training refers to that which is listed in the SAFs and on the User Training page.
General safety information for all EMC users is included in the EMC101 course. Also, safe practices are incorporated into various User Guides and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). Most SOPs are written by EMC staff, although occasionally users will be required to submit other SOPs to the EMC for approval.
The following SAF is for research that is performed with any of the electron microscopes in the EMC.
The following documents pertain to the use of the EMC's specimen preparation laboratory.
The following SAFs pertain to specific activities within the EMC.
The SAFs are due to be replaced in 2010 by something called Work Planning and Control documents, but the basic safety information will be very similar.
