Visiting the Materials Science Division - Computer Policy

  • Personal computers are allowed on site, but may NOT be connected to the lab network without permission from a systems administrator. An administrator can add the computer to the visitor's network which provides access to the Internet but not the internal Argonne intranet.
  • Non-ANL computers attached to ANL networks shall be held to the same standards as laboratory computers and must comply with ANL and Division cyber security requirements.
  • Argonne's computing services are available solely for the purpose of carrying out Laboratory work (including authorized work of other agencies). Laboratory work consists primarily of assigned technical and management work, but it also includes professional development undertaken with the knowledge and approval of your supervisor. You are responsible for the use of your account. Laboratory computers are not to be used for any other purposes (such as games or personal, social, fraternal, or private business).
  • No classified work may be done on central computers. Certain sensitive data is stored on the computer. You may not access sensitive data unless specifically authorized to do so.
  • To ensure that users of services are who they claim to be, we have implemented validation methods that require passwords to use interactive computer systems. We require that you change your password at your first logon and at least every six months afterwards. We require that you not share or divulge your password.
