Daniel joined Argonne in December 2010 and investigates structure-property-processing relations in inorganic materials. His work pursues directed inorganic synthesis by understanding the structural building blocks that first form in polychalcogenide (and other) fluxes. Other projects utilize both Bragg and total scattering (X-ray and neutron) to investigate the structure of materials that display heterogeneity on the nanoscale, with an emphasis on semiconductors, thermoelectrics, and superconductors. This disorder may include inclusions, precipitates, incoherent distortions, etc. Daniel received his BS with Honors in Materials Science and Engineering from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 2006 and his PhD from the Materials Department at the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2010, advised by Prof. Ram Seshadri. His thesis focused on synthesis of self-assembled magnetic composites and total scattering descriptions of oxides, with a focus on simultaneous fits to the Bragg profile and pair distribution function via reverse Monte Carlo modeling. He was awarded a Graduate Student Gold Award by the Materials Research Society in 2010 and was the recipient of the 23rd Louis Rosen Prize from the Los Alamos Neutron Science Center.
